Were sutras being read properly?

There was a memorial service on my husband's mother's side the other day, and I attended it for the first time since getting married.

It was a memorial service for great-grandpa's father, great-grandpa, and great-grandma.
The monk who read the sutras was very kind to my children, saying it was OK to run around. However, when I started reading the sutras without wearing a robe, the sutras continued in the middle, which sounded like namunamuda, namunamu namunamu (the pronunciation stretches word by word, like how to read sutras). I was flipping through something like a book with sutras written on it at fixed intervals, but there were times when I flipped 2 pages fluently.
There were also people who said that their grandmothers had never heard such sutras and that they were making a fool of people.
