Characteristics of sects in a nutshell

There seem to be various denominations of Buddhism, but how are they different? I don't know how difficult it is, so please tell me the characteristics in a nutshell.

For example, is Jodo Shinshu a “power petition”?

10 Zen Responses

In the Soto sect, “just sit down”

“Simply meditating” (meditating) is simply meditating earnestly.
The Soto sect is a Zen sect.

It's just Nembutsu.

There may also be people who say it is a power other than the original one,

For me, Jodo Shinshu in a nutshell
I think it's “namuami dabutsu/naami amidabutsu.”

In Buddhism, it is said that one devotees to a Buddhist monk, but it does not call the monk's name, nor the name of the sutras,
“Nanmandabutsu” is the name of the Buddha. I would like to take that position.

The Shingon sect is an “instant attainment of Buddha”

I'm a monk of the Shingon sect.
In the case of the Shingon sect, one word is “immediately attain Buddha” (you can become a Buddha while still in your own body with worries)
I wonder if.

If you add a little more,
・Immediate attainment of Buddha (Sokushin jōbutsu: If you use the Buddha's words, feel like a Buddha, and act like a Buddha, aren't you with the Buddha anymore)
・Mandala thought (mandala shiso: everything in the world exists in a related way while inheriting the Buddha's species, and nothing is unnecessary)
・Confidential land establishment (Mitsugon kokudokonryu: aiming to make this world a wonderful place)
These are the 3 pillars.

If you add “Soto sect”

I would like to add more answers from Shinji Mizushige.

Dignity is Buddhism (Buddhism) ⇒ zazen, clothing, memorial services, daily life (waking up in the morning, washing the face, brushing, toilet, cleaning, bathing, eating, shaving hair, and even going to bed) have been established as manners.
It is called a “dojo in the public world,” and ascetic practices don't have their own world; everything is in the public world, so you should not take a break from ascetic practices. It's not something to take a break. That is the Buddha's teaching. It is carried out under this doctrine.

The most misunderstood Buddhist term “otherpower petition”

Kyosuke
My name is Tetsuya Urakami from Nagomi-an.

As the Jodo Shinshu Sect says, I think there are many monks who answer “the original request for power.”

Incidentally, since they ask this kind of question, it may be a “sermon to the Buddha,” but please be aware that “rely on the power of others without making an effort on your own,” which is often used in the world, does not mean the original meaning.
But if you look at the characters, you'll misunderstand it, right?

“Invalidity of Self-Power” = “Self-Power Invalidity”

My name is Wada from the Otani school of Shinshu (Higashi Honganji).

It's the opposite of what Tetsuya Urakami said earlier,
Realizing that you can't rely on your own strength
It's called “self-invalidation.”

“Based on faith,”
It is an important phrase in the Jodo Shinshu sect.

A gift of confidence

Several people from the Jodo Shinshu have already answered,

I think all of them are a good representation of the Jodo Shinshu sect.

If I had to add one thing, it would be “faith given”

Faith is not something I do.

It's what Amita-sama is pointing at me.

I don't know much about other denominations,

When I think that the person that Amida wishes to be is “me,”

I can't help but feel grateful.

“Namu Amida Buddha” is the Jodo Shinshu Honganji school.

“Namu Amida Buddha”

It is the Jodo Shinshu Honganji school.

This wish (I will definitely save it! It was revealed that Shinran Shonin was the one who received Amitabha Buddha as it was and decided to die in the Pure Land by sincerely believing in it. In response to the cry of Amitabha Buddha, a thank-you nenbutsu appears.

The salvation that has arrived until now is absolute power, and this is the salvation of the Jodo Shinshu sect.

do you understand!?

Kyosuke

This is Kawaguchi Hidetoshi. This is a humble answer to the question.

It is said that “the characteristics of denominations are in one word,” but it is really difficult to simply explain the differences...

While I was thinking about answers, I remembered [Kamakura Buddhism I understand well], which was often played on Twitter and Facebook a while ago, and searched for it.

[Understanding Kamakura Buddhism]

“Let's sit and think about various things” → Rinzai sect
“Isn't it okay to just sit down?” →Soto sect
“If you recite the title, you'll be saved, right?” →Nichiren sect
“If you chant Nembutsu, you'll be saved, right?” → Jodo sect
“We've already been saved, haven't we?” → Jodo Shinshu
“More than that, why don't you dance with me?” → Jizong

I don't know who thought of it for what purpose, but when I first saw it, I laughed quite a bit at the end “Why don't you dance with me” while thinking, “Well, that's too simplified and there will be various misunderstandings...” (laughs)

The purpose of Buddhism is to aim for enlightenment, and the methodology for that purpose is often compared to differences in trailheads, routes, etc. to aim for the summit, but when it comes to explaining that difference, a considerable amount of writing is inevitable...

However, it might be a good idea to first think about phrases that you can be interested in even if they are easy to learn, as described above.

For example, I made the following in a simple, humble way, prepared for misunderstandings.

“Everyone is connected → Kegon sect”
“Everything is just a manifestation of the heart → Hosso sect”
“Oioi, let's just keep the rules → Ritsu Sect”
“Aim to warp to the goal all at once → esoteric Buddhism, Shingon Buddhism, Tendai Buddhism, etc.”

As I think about it this way, it seems like there are still a lot of phrases coming up... well, I'm not going to talk bad about it any more...

Below, I will list the addresses of sites that are relatively carefully summarized about representative denominations in Japan, so I hope you can refer to them again when you have time.

Also, I think the explanations about each denomination on Wikipedia are quite summarized and useful for getting an overview.

What is the Soto sect

This is not an official one in my view.
However, the definition of the Soto sect is not something that should be easily dismissed in one word.
① The Soto sect (probably all denominations, not limited to the Soto sect) is not the kind that is classified as the so-called “○○ sect.” It is not an individual sect or religion called the “Soto sect.”
(This is because the person called Dogen Zenji, who spread his teachings, is called the Soto sect or Zen sect. (This means that if you determine the essence of things, there is no denomination above the origin of humans)

② The Soto sect has a motto called Minna no Sect, an adaptable school.
(Because if it's not something that is common to everyone, it will fall into a biased ❝ thought ❞ with no universality)

③ The Soto sect is often said to only meddle,
It's not a foolish teaching that “you should just shut up and sit back” or “just sit in silence.”
(Dōgen Zenji is constantly left behind, saying that one can attain mental and physical attrition (enlightenment) by simply sitting down)
The reason why there is so much emphasis on meditating is that scholars at the time took excerpts from a huge number of teachings of Dogen Zenji and misunderstood that this was the center of the teachings.

④ What is called “the rule of dignity, Buddhism, manners is the purpose” in the Soto sect is not a cliché teaching to correct manners and dignity at events, events, and memorial services in a temple.
(Where I am now, the state of the accident is majestic, and everyone looks like it. Manners mean making ❝ mind-body futility, mind-body abandonment ❞ as they should be (law), and it's not about accomplishing anything that seems to be manners, and it's not about putting effort into it to make a mess)

⑤ Therefore, the Soto sect
Everyone is right now, here, this thing right in front of them,
It is a teaching where you can realize a comfortable and peaceful life every day by understanding the root of things, not being misled by things, forgetting what you recognize as yourself, freeing yourself from a life of ideological thought, without getting caught up in the heart, having no worries, no evaluation of right or wrong. That wasn't just a word, was it? (^^ ♪
