I lost my confidence in the wake of changes in my workplace

My place of work was a branch with 5 sales members at the beginning, and a total of 7 people, me and my colleague who joined the company as sales assistants.

We originally went to the office, but since remote work began due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our support team has been working from home until now.

Also, from around the same time that telecommuting began, we also undertook the work of branch B, and we worked as a joint A/B support team with 3 auxiliary members from branch B.

Within a few years, the sales staff at branch A retired one after another, and before I knew it, I became the only branch manager.

That situation continued for a while, but as of this year, the assistant belonging to branch B retired.
Then, this month, it was reported that a colleague belonging to branch A who joined the company together will also retire.
I was quite shocked at this point, but they say that the branch manager of branch A will retire this week.
The branch I was enrolled in will disappear.

There are currently no major changes at Branch B, so the business itself has not changed.

However, it seems very distorted and uneasy that I am the only one to carry out the work of the B branch, which is far away, without having a branch to which I belong.

What will happen to my position?
Will one person do a job that was originally done by 3 people?
In the first place, is it OK for the company to stay enrolled as it is?
I think the real intention is that it would be nice if they quit incidentally.

To be honest, I can understand that there have been so many retirees.
Even so, I loved my job and my colleagues, and it was an environment with advantages, so I couldn't decide to retire.

When I was left alone in this way, I lost confidence whether to continue like this or change jobs, and I felt like my life was blocked in all directions, and I couldn't sleep.

I don't think I have any value.
They probably don't matter to the company or to their colleagues.
Or rather, I wonder if they all quit because of me.
I wonder if it made me feel bad the whole time.
I feel sorry for this mess, and I feel sorry for my family. I don't think there are any other companies that would accept it.

I'm not even saying I want to die, but I want everything to end due to some mistake.

I want to get back on my feet, but I don't know where to start.

Your strong “obsession” with your current “company” is binding on your heart

It is said that people around you leave one after another, and even the branch where you belong is gone. In a situation where only one person is left behind, it is natural to be unable to sleep due to anxiety. I'm sorry for that painful feeling.

They blame themselves, “Did everyone quit because of themselves?” but that's definitely not the case. As you yourself say “I can understand why retirees continued,” this is an “environmental” issue such as the company's structure and constitution. The power of one ordinary man (Bonbu) cannot influence the lives of many people. Please don't blame yourself too much.

Also, I'm worried about “will one person do the work for 3 people,” but that is physically impossible either. Adjusting the workload is a manager's responsibility, not a burden you should carry.

The reason why you think “I want everything to end due to some mistake” is because your strong “obsession” with your current “company” and “work” binds your mind. Buddhism explains that suffering comes from obsession. Your life does not only exist within this company, nor is your value determined by the circumstances of the company.

I'm still in my 30s, young enough to start a new path. For now, just try gently lowering the heavy luggage that you have carried on your back. Once your mind has settled down a bit, letting go of your obsessions and searching for a new relationship called a “job change” should also be an important step in protecting yourself.

Human resources are for each person (person) (thing)

I understand your concern. It makes me anxious, doesn't it?

Idiots also worked as office workers for many years. Of course, I was transferred, but I also had the experience of being seconded, which I could only think of as being “sent off” by myself at the time.

At that time, I still remember the words I was told by a senior I respected.

“Human resources are written as people, and it's for each person. Don't worry too much”

At that time, I thought, “Even so, my life is at stake” (laughs)

But later, I was in a position involved in human resources and management, and I understood the meaning a little bit.

The company has many employees. Personnel matters are determined by various circumstances, such as consolidation of departments, retirees, workload, profitability, and overall organizational policies. It is not necessarily determined only by a person's abilities or values.

This time, too, rather than being left alone because you have a problem, I think there is a higher possibility that the company thinks that you can continue the business as it is because you are working remotely at the B branch.

At least, you don't have to blame yourself, saying, “Everyone quit because of me.”

People retire for different reasons. Salary, job description, family circumstances, company policies, job changes. If you take all of that on your own responsibility, it is natural that it will be painful.

The first thing I want you to think about

“What does the company think of me?”

It's not,

“What do I want to do now?”

That's it.

Do you want to stay with your current company? Can one person do the amount of work? What will happen to affiliations? If you have any questions, you can check with the company.

You don't have to quit right away to change jobs. It doesn't matter if you just look at jobs.

Your position in the company and your own value are different things.

In Buddhism, it is called impermanent behavior. Companies, relationships, and environments will change.

That's why we don't even entrust our own value to things that are going to change.

Right now, it's not blocked in all directions.

I'm just losing sight of the road.

First, “What do I want to do?”

Please consider them one by one from there.

Let's get a thorough explanation from the HR department and consult

I read it.
You're so shocked that you feel like you've been left behind at work. I don't know the details, but it really conveys your feelings. I understand your feelings from the bottom of my heart.

I don't know the status of the company's operations or branches, but I think it's okay to have an explanation in advance from HR or my manager about such changes. After all, let's take a thorough explanation of that. On top of that, why don't you tell the HR department how you want to work yourself.
I think it's okay to have a thorough consultation, including whether it will be the department or job you want.

It probably depends on the type of industry and region, but there will also be such rearrangements and retirements, etc., and there will always be restructuring.

I also used to work for a large company, so I was reorganized about once every 3 months and moved somewhere else. Also, mergers and acquisitions were carried out frequently between companies, so each time they often worked for a completely different company, department, or business.
You will probably have many transfers and job changes in the future, so it's also very important to calm down and consider your direction.

I sincerely pray that you will continue to have many encounters and experiences, grow, and work satisfactorily.
And I will support you from the bottom of my heart. Close to the Heart m (__) m

Please stay calm, keep a close eye on organizational trends, and make an assessment.

For you, it means that the circumstances around you have changed drastically.
However, if “I can understand that retirees continued,” sooner or later, they probably fell into this kind of situation.

The operation and status of the company will also change in line with the social situation. I'm worried about the tasks and workload that will be placed on you in the future.

Also, it is certain that the reason you are so uneasy is that the colleagues you have worked with have supported and motivated you to go to work.

When it comes to retirement, everyone thought about it in their own future plans. Let's ask the company for explanations and make adjustments so that you can work with satisfaction.

Please stay calm, keep a close eye on organizational trends, and make an assessment.
